Scottish Cup Final: Hibernian v Heart of Midlothian

It certainly has been a dramatic season in Scottish football and the fall out and drama from the events that have unfolded over the last few months will likely continue to effect the game for possibly seasons ahead.

What a season like this needs is something historic and intriguing to bring the season to an end. Hearts and Hibs have duly delivered this request by contesting the first all Edinburgh Scottish Cup final since 1896. Hearts prevailed that day with a 3-1 win at Logie Green in Edinburgh itself. The most recent Scottish Cup match between these sides was the 2006 semi-final which was held at Hampden. A rampant Hearts destroyed their city rivals 4-0 and set up a final against "fairytale" side Gretna. That was the last time Hearts lifted the cup thanks to a penalty shoot out against the Second Division side.

If you asked a Hearts fan about their last victory in the Scottish Cup final the overwhelming majority will be able to tell you all about it and a sizeable majority will also remember the time before that, 1998 when Hearts were victorious against Rangers at Celtic Park as the Rangers 9 in a row era came to an end.

That takes us onto one of the main plot-lines of this final. Ask a Hibs fan that same question and I guarantee you will not find a single fan who can actually tell you what it was like to see Hibs win the cup. Hibs are among the biggest clubs in Scottish football outside of the Old Firm but they haven't won the cup since 1902. A remarkable fact when you consider my own club, Aberdeen weren't formed until 1903 and have won it seven times.

Hibs have a chance to end their 110 year wait for the trophy while Hearts have the equally tantalising goal of lengthening that wait. Big matches often fail to live up to the build up and hype but here is hoping that this final is one remembered for an exciting and memorable match.
