FC Girondins de Bordeaux

Posted Image

FC Girondins de Bordeaux (commonly known as Bordeaux) is a French football team based in the city of Bordeaux.

The club was founded in 1881 as an omnisport club. The Girondins won the French league in 1950, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1999 and are the current champions with a first place finish in 2009. The club plays the home-matches in the Stade Chaban Delmas, named after the former mayor of Bordeaux, Jacques Chaban-Delmas. Parc Lescure was the previous name of the stadium. The club has often qualified for European football.

Their biggest European triumph was reaching the UEFA Cup final in 1996. After qualifying for the Intertoto Cup, the Girondins won that competition to get a place in the UEFA Cup. They reached the final after victories over Vardar Skopje, Rotor Volgograd, Real Betis, a heroic quarter final win over Milan, and a semi-final win over Slavia Prague. In the UEFA Cup final, Bayern Munich prevented the Bordeaux winning their first European Cup after a 5-1 defeat on aggregate.

Girondins de Bordeaux’s Yoann Gourcuff Back In Training

Having missed France’s World Cup qualifying matches due to a thigh problem, Yoann Gourcuff returned to training for club side Girondins de Bordeaux over the weekend, according to a report from the club’s official website.

The website stated that Gourcuff trained with the side in Haillan, where les Girondins are based, on Saturday. However, the 23-year-old France international was unable to train with the rest of the squad, jogging lightly on his own.

The former Milan man will step up his training gradually over the course of the next week and could be available to head coach Laurent Blanc for Bordeaux’s weekend fixture against Auxerre.

Since limping off at half-time in the Champions League win over Maccabi Haifa, Gourcuff has missed only one game for his club side - the 3-1 defeat away to Saint-Etienne.

At international level his absence has not been felt to the same extent, with les Bleus claiming an easy 5-0 win over the Faroe Islands on Saturday night in Brittany, the area of France that the young playmaker was born and bred.

Gourcuff played a pivotal role in Bordeaux claiming their first Ligue 1 title for a decade last season and had started this campaign in an equally bright manner, scoring four times in seven appearances, as well as producing two decisive passes for others.

Thanks for that Tamim!

Here's a little up date on his recovery process. Sudouest reported today that Gourcuff has went into high gear this morning. He was merely doing jogging on Monday along club physio, David Das Neves. Today he was doing dribbling and acceleration, one of his test were juggling the ball around the pitch, one lap. He did not drop the ball once while doing it. It's very likely that he will be included on the squad against Auxerre on Saturday.

With the Bayern game in hand on Wednesday, he may not play a full 90mins, he may start on the bench as a sub or subbed off early. I would also like to inform everyone of the importance of taking all 3 points from Bayern on Wednesday day with Ribery to be very likely to miss the first encounter and Robben out unlit the end or the month also with a knee injury. We can exit that match leading the group, leaving a great possibility of moving on to the next round of the Champions League which I think has never been achieved before in our history.

Marouane also returned to training today after leaving his internationals early due to a knee injury.

It was announced yesterday that David Bellion (27) signed a contract extension for three years <_< , linking him at the club until June 2014. Arrived in Bordeaux at the beginning of the 2007 season, the striker went through Sunderland, Manchester United, West Ham and Nice before landing at Bordeaux. In 76 matches in all competitions, he has scored 16 goals in the Marine and Blanc.

I can not say I'm pleased about the extension, frankly, I'm agitated by the news. It doesn't give me the slightest indication that they do plan to rid of him and up-grade. We have Gouffran and should be looking to add another high quality striker.

Well he's by no means an asset off the bench, and if you really wasn't give a few of our forwards a rest you can't really afford to if your up by one or in a state of deadlock because the change he brings about isn't always something you would hope for but rather it's opposite. I haven't seen someone miss so many sitters, (other than Brandoa of course  :P ), crystal clear goal scoring opportunities; one on ones with the goal keepers, tap-ins practically on the 6 year box, you name it, he has missed it in every way imaginable. I think we can really due with a player that can bring us some solid regularity off the bench and can give players like Chamakh and Cavenaghi rest when thing are a bit tense. Even if that person gave a little bit of another dimension tactically and/or physical that would be a move in the right direction. Bellion doesn't do that currently, It's actually Gouffran that brings about that change we needs.

haha, after re-reading my post, maybe I over exaggerated a bit, he does through away quite a number of really good opportunities, but it isn't every game. He has scored 16 goals after all (but it feels like 2 to be honest). Regardless, with the addiction of Plasil, Gouffran can and has been ahead of Bellion in the peaking order. We should cash in on him and looks to see if we can improve our roster.

Edit: looking at it in another angle, with Chamakh looking to leave this summer or possibly this winter, maybe keeping Bellion on the roster isn't such a bad move. we can still cash on him instead of letting his contract run out and expire, leaving us with some money to replace Chamakh. :shrug03:

So-so, not bad and not great either but he's doing his job, you can't really complain. I would like for him to be going well beyond expectations but he's new and adjusting too the league again. He did come up big in the Juve match with the goal and there was another also (but I can't really remember). He's alright for now, I don't know what to expect from him in the future but hopefully theirs a lot more he can show us.

I'm hoping he can show he's true colors soon. He's pretty good when in form.

Arsene Wenger Said He Didn't Need Marouane Chamakh – Bordeaux Chairman

Contrary to reports in the summer, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had no need for Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh. Indeed, the only realistic destination for the Ligue 1 hotshot was West Ham United. That is the belief of Girondins chairman Jean-Louis Triaud, who also discredited Sunderland's apparent interest.

Regarding the Arsenal rumours, Triaud told So Foot: "They made me an unacceptable offer. Then I had no further news for a fortnight.

"I picked up the phone and said: 'What are you doing Arsene?' and he told me: 'It's fine, I don't need Chamakh, whatever the transfer costs'."

Furthermore, Triaud insisted that the club would not be held to ransom over Chamakh's demands.

"I don't care at all about the player's wishes. From the moment he signed with us for four years, he signed for four years.

"I have known players who haven't been very good and they didn't come up to me to say: 'I'm paid too much, I'm going to terminate my contract for sympathy.'

"So why if they are good should I go and tell them: 'It's okay, we'll sort out the contract you signed'?"

He concluded: "Sunderland didn't meet our criteria. No, West Ham was better."
