In the fifties they were an established First Division side, occasionally finishing within what would be the 'top four' today, along with the other top teams in the country at the time Wolves and Burnley.

Stanley Matthews was one of the best players in the world at the time, and Stan Mortensen and Jimmy Armfield amongst the best in the country.

Blackpool is only a small town though, with small attendances so as clubs from bigger industrial cities elsewhere emerged Blackpool's fortunes sort of declined.

This sentence sounded very romantic. I think it even deserves a movie: A 50's setting with all the big characters of the team. The story telling the big days and as story moves on the movie ends where the glory years are over and the team sort of set in the background. Should be a very good drama movie! ;)

Both parents know about as little as the other, with my Mum perhaps edging it slightly. My Dad knows almost nothing about the game, perhaps unaware than an offside rule even exists, and only mentions scraps of the football talk that he hears on building sites and reads in the back-page headlines. He knew that Redknapp was in court, for example, and he'll mention certain results. Despite this, he is actually a good player. His Dad, my Grandad, was a very good player, so I'm told. He used to play football with my Dad (hence how he's so good, despite lacking interest), and even had a couple of trials at QPR. I forget why he never made it, but I think it was injury/fitness related.

If it wasn't for my other Grandad, on my Mum's side, I doubt that I'd even like football. He raised me as a Spurs fan and took me to games from a very early age, often resulting in mild arguments with my Dad, who thought that he was pushing it on me.

Good times.

My father has some interest in the game, used to be a pretty good player when he played but I'd exaggerate if I'd say that he passed the interest on. He was a bit of an Aston Villa fan when he was younger I believe, nowadays he watches some Real Madrid games with me sometimes - at least el clasico. Always trying to troll me also... my mother on the other hand maybe have heard of like four players and knows of like four teams. I know my grandfather used to be a pretty good player though and I enjoy hearing his stories about football in his time, telling me how Maradona was the greatest he ever witnessed and how fucking brilliant Gre-No-Li was in the 50s.

Mine knows nothing about the game. I remember I had to explain to my mom why player X plays for Chelsea and England at the same time. So yeah, say no more.
