This came up as the discussion point in another website which I frequent, which has about 95% British people. I thought it was too biased towards Cole, and I didn't enjoy being called a "racist" for saying Roberto Carlos was better. (fuck them... =P) So I thought it'd be nice to start the debate on here. (and this place has quite a bit more foreigners, which should prove to be interesting poll results.

Compare what about them?

Anything you want.

For a topic starter, how about which one of them were the better player over the last decade? (as that was the question in the other aforementioned forum)

In his prime, I'd have to go for Roberto Carlos. When used correctly he could be absolutely superb. However in the wrong system, he had weaknesses that could be well exploited. It's a very hard one to call, as Ashley Cole is a brilliant player too, easily the best left back in the game currently, and I don't enjoy saying that. I might actually go as far to say as it's too close to call, as despite being left backs, they are two very different players, who enjoyed their prime years in different eras, and never played in the same league, so points of comparison are hard to come by.

I suppose if we go into some hypothetical world in which both players exist in their prime, and I could choose one to have on my team, I'd go for Ashley, as I could rely on him to be more consistent. But then if you're saying who is/was the better player, it'd say Roberto Carlos.

On his day, Roberto Carlos could be the best left back ever but the truth is he would have games that made you wonder why he is so highly rated. I would have to go for Ashley, who seems to be very underrated outside of England.

Wait a second. I think i know what forum you are talking about :P :P
Cole is an amazing player and the best lb in the world right now but Carlos for me was the better player just less consistent.

Roberto Carlos was one of the best left-back in the world ever. Ashley Cole was JUST the best on his position when no more alternatives were...

Why? Because he could hit a powerful laced shot?

Paolo Maldini who? Ruud Krol who? Nilton Santos which? Roger Byrne when? Fachetti qui?

No, youre right. Blasting laced shots from fk's and running really really fast is all that makes a good left back. Silly me.

I wouldn't say Roberto Carlos is the best LB in history, there are other contenders.

Whoever Ashley Cole is not one of them contenders. In my experience, only the English think Cole is one of the best in history. (And we all know how the English overhype themselves)

Just because Ashley Cole is the best in England doesn't mean he's the best left-back. Roberto Carlos was a legend as well as one of the best LB's in the world if not the best. You just remember his free-kicks, so no wonder you seem to clutch to it.
