Dutch Football

The Premier League and La Liga may cause fans to endure an agonisingly prolonging hiatus over the summer, but the Eredivisie – like the Dutch people – is kind to its faithful crowd. It starts earlier than most top leagues. At the top, it is of course, a chance for Frank de Boer and Ajax marry himself into Ajax legend – if he hasn’t done so already, but Cocu, who hasn’t faced a mass exoduses and his PSV side could be quite a force to reckon with. Feyenoord, Vitesse and FC Twente will go into the new season significantly weakened. In Dusan Tadic, Graziano Pelle and Alfred Finnbogason the Eredivisie have lost their three most productive players, which only means three new ones will stand up and prove themselves. How will their respective clubs fare without their talismanic players? Can PEC Zwolle spring another surprise season? Will FC Dordrecht continue their fairytale after promotion?

Manchester City regained their Premier League title after an enthralling title race last campaign, edging out a Suarez inspired Liverpool. City have grown stronger with the additions of Fernando and Mangala and while Suarez has left the reds for Spain, Liverpool have added depth and still possess quality. Both teams will have competition this season though, Chelsea have invested heavily with Mourinho splashing the cash most notably on Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas. Arsenal splashed the cash again to bring in Alexis Sanchez, Debuchy and Chambers while Manchester United will hope to be back in force under new man Louis van Gaal. The chasing pack are all equally contested, and it's sure to be another important season for Everton, Newcastle, Tottenham and the likes. It promises to be another season of fantastic football, controversial decisions, high intensity atmospheres and wonderful unpredictability. Just around the corner is a whole different experience in the Football League too, which will produce another frantic race to the top. English football has it all!

French Football

The club from the capital, PSG, will be hoping to secure a hat-trick of domestic crowns and in a similar vein to last year, Monaco will look to at least run them close under new leadership. Important seasons beckon for sleeping giants looking to escape the wilderness such as Lyon and Marseille, whereas the likes of Lille and Saint-Etienne will just be content to qualify for Europe once more. A hypothetical question mark can be placed against almost any other team in the division, with most struggling financially and having to pass off their talent into the hands of the richest. A warm welcome to promoted sides Lens, Metz and Caen, who will all look to avoid relegation first and foremost, but will also have taken heart from the efforts of Reims, who performed admirably in their first season back in the top flight last campaign.

German Football

Unfortunately the Bundesliga has become a one-horse race in the last few seasons and Bayern Munich are almost crowned champions before the start a ball is kicked. This year will be a big challenge for Borussia Dortmund having lost Lewandowski to Bayern but they have brought in reinforcements in Adrian Ramos and Ciro Immobile try and offset his loss. Elsewhere it will be interesting to see the development of Schalke’s young side with players like Max Meyer and Julian Draxler such outstanding prospects. Other contenders for the remaining Champions League places will be Leverkusen, Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach. At the bottom a collection of clubs that have possibly over-achieved in the past few seasons might suffer this year. Hertha Berlin have performed very well in the last couple of years but they have lost their best two strikers and this could cost them dearly. Expect Hannover, Mainz, Freiburg and the newly promoted Paderborn to be fighting it out for survival too.

Italian Football

  1. AC Milan
  2. Internazionale
  3. Juventus
  4. Gli Azzurri

The Old Lady start the new season as hot favourites to take this years Scudetto again but Conte’s absence will be keenly felt, in the last three years he has led Juventus to the league title and won the Coppa Italia twice, but they have failed to shine on the European stage. Roma have been busy in the transfer market and with veteran Totti still leading the way they could really push Juventus hard this season. With a bolstered squad, Napoli could challenge the top two of last season a little harder this time around. It looks like Serie A will be a three-way race between these three sides this season. That’s not to say another team won't break the stranglehold, two seem most likely; Fiorentina and Inter. Of the rest of, arguably only Lazio have made signings required to push them into Champions League contention. The best the remainder can seemingly aim for is either avoiding relegation, or at best pushing for Europa League spots. Clubs like Genoa, Cagliari, Parma, Udinese and Torino have been amongst the biggest spenders. At the other end of the table, it will be interesting to see if tiny Sassuolo can once again defy the odds and stay in Italy’s top flight.

Portuguese Football

  4. A Selecção Portuguesa

After a three year drought and many struggles, Benfica came back stronger than ever and won the domestic treble. Big teams came calling, and now only a fraction of the squad remains, leaving many fans hopes in their new signings. Disappointed by their third place finish, Porto invested heavily in the summer and completely changed the look of the team in order to regain the league title. Sporting returned to Portugal's top 3 after a two year absence and look to reestablish themselves as a heavyweight in Europe. Braga suffered one of their worst seasons in years, while their rivals Guimaraes are beginning to surprise everyone by promoting their youth players. There are also the Portuguese stars abroad; from 'El Especial' in José Mourinho, to one of the world's best in Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mourinho is on his way out of Real Madrid and a new manager will have to find a way to stop Tito Villanova's club. Messi and Ronaldo continue their celebrated statistical duel, but new Barca star Neymar threatens to get in on the act. Atletico Madrid are the King's Cup Champions, and clubs like Malaga and Valencia still hope to challenge the big two for next season's title.
